At YBP Group, we had the opportunity to work with Shell on a project to create a warm and welcoming reception area for their workspace. The project involved manufacturing a bespoke reception desk that would reflect the premium feel of the Shell brand while ensuring both functionality and durability. The result was a beautifully crafted desk that met Shell’s high expectations and became a striking feature of their workspace.
Initial Consultation & Design Collaboration
For this project, Shell provided the design, and it was relatively straightforward in terms of manufacturability. However, there was one key design challenge that arose during the process: getting the desk up four floors and into place in the building. Despite this challenge, the design itself required minimal tweaks, and we were able to proceed smoothly with the manufacturing process.

Material Selection & Manufacturing Process
The materials chosen for the desk reflected the client’s preference for both durability and premium aesthetics. The following materials were selected:

Real wood walnut veneer lacquered finish for a luxurious and natural appearance

MDF for structure and strength

Solid surface for smooth, seamless surfaces

Magnetic steel and printed magnetic vinyl for the signage and branding

LED lighting to enhance the visual impact

Brushed aluminium plinth to provide a sophisticated and sturdy base
The desk was manufactured in sections to accommodate the limited access to the building. Each section was designed to be modular and built up on-site for ease of installation. Given the constraints, our team ensured that the sections were lightweight and easy to handle while maintaining the integrity of the design.
Project Timeline & Delivery
The project timeline was set for 8 weeks, and we were able to meet this deadline with precision and careful planning. A critical part of the delivery process was coordinating a direct delivery at a specific time to allow access to the building. Health and safety briefings were required for all individuals entering the site, ensuring that the process went smoothly.
As part of our standard procedure, we invited the installation team to our workshop before the installation. This allowed them to see the construction in person, understand the assembly process, and ensure a seamless installation. Thanks to this preparation, the installation was completed in just one day.
Challenges & Solutions
One of the primary challenges we encountered during this project was the grain direction of the walnut veneer. The desk was over 3 meters wide, but the veneer did not come in such large widths with the specific grain pattern the client requested. To overcome this, we carefully planned and executed seamless joins on the counter to ensure that the grain flowed continuously and naturally across the entire surface. The result was a flawless, premium-looking desk that adhered to the client’s vision.
Outcome & Client Satisfaction
The client was extremely satisfied with the final result, and the bespoke reception desk has since become a focal point of Shell’s workspace. The desk not only met but exceeded Shell’s expectations for both design and functionality. Since completing this project, we have continued to collaborate with Shell on additional projects, building a strong and ongoing partnership.
