Project: Solid Surface Display Stands for Premium Skincare Products
At YBP Group, we take pride in delivering bespoke, high-quality joinery solutions. For LIPS Pharmacy, we were tasked with manufacturing three premium display stands for their premium skincare product line. These display units needed to reflect the high-end nature of the brand while also being practical and durable for the busy pharmacy environment. The project was a collaborative effort that ensured every detail was meticulously planned and executed, from design through to installation.
Initial Consultation & Design Collaboration
The project began with the client providing an initial design for the display stands. However, after reviewing the design, we realised that it wasn’t feasible to manufacture within the budget constraints. Our team worked closely with both the client and their design team to refine the design into a solution that met all their aesthetic and functional requirements. We focused on ensuring durability, a premium finish, and ease of on-site assembly. The result was a refined design that all parties agreed upon, ensuring the stands would be both attractive and practical.
Material Selection & Manufacturing Process
Solid surface (Corian) was chosen for its luxurious look and feel, which aligned perfectly with the client’s vision for a high-end finish. While laminating was initially considered, the client’s desire for an ultra-premium product led us to opt for Corian, which required a more intricate manufacturing process. The Corian material needed to be bent into specific shapes, so we created formers and utilised a heat-bending process to achieve the desired curves. The material’s weight presented an additional challenge as the client requested the units to be on castors for mobility. To support the weight, we custom-built a steel support base frame, ensuring that the stands would be both functional and safe.
The manufacturing process involved using an oven and pre-made formers to shape the Corian. Once the units were shaped, we allowed them to set for several days before rechecking the curves with our former to ensure consistency in radius and shape. This quality control process helped us achieve the precision required for such a high-end product.
Project Timeline & Delivery
The project timeline was set for 10 weeks, which was successfully met through careful planning and a well-structured production schedule. Our team ensured each phase of production was meticulously planned, so the final product would be ready on time. We pride ourselves on our ability to stick to deadlines, and in this case, we delivered the three units exactly as promised.
The display stands were delivered to the client in a precise, scheduled delivery slot, ensuring smooth access to their complex. The stands were delivered in four pieces—designed like a tower structure—and we included clear installation instructions for the client’s team. We also provided time at our workshop for their installation team to visit and go through the assembly process, ensuring a seamless installation when the units arrived on-site.
Challenges & Solutions
As with any bespoke project, unexpected challenges can arise. Early testing revealed that the weight of the Corian display stands was causing the base and castors to buckle, which was a concern for the stability and durability of the units. To address this, we decided to create a metal plate to reinforce the base and support the weight more effectively. This solution resolved the issue and ensured the stands were both sturdy and safe for use.
Outcome & Client Satisfaction
The end result was a set of premium display stands that met the client’s high expectations for both form and function. The client was extremely pleased with the final product, which perfectly showcased their premium skincare line. Due to the success of this project, we are now working on two more projects with LIPS Pharmacy, scheduled for completion in 2025.
Key Takeaways
One key takeaway from this project was the importance of understanding the weight distribution of solid surface materials, particularly when incorporating mobility features such as castors. Initially, castors were not part of the plan, but their addition later in the project required us to adapt quickly. This experience has given us valuable insight into the importance of planning for weight-bearing components when working with solid surface materials in future projects.
